Hi, Thank you for your question. I would advise against painting the tube guards as this would void any warranty and these are not intended to be painted. If you were to paint these you would need a paint that can stand up to higher temps for extended periods of time and still be translucent. Even so I cannot verify how the final light output would be. They do make red tube guards in a T8 like our SKU: TG-T8TG-R
